Cleyera japonica is a broadleaf evergreen shrub or small tree that typically grows to 10-15' tall by 8-10' wide. The leaves are 6–10 cm long, smooth, oval, leathery, shiny and dark green above, yellowish-green below, with deep furrows for the leaf stem.
